Rwenzori Hiking Tour Details

Often called the “Mountains of the Moon,” the Rwenzori range offers one of the most unique and challenging trekking experiences in Africa. Unlike the volcanic cones of Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya, the Rwenzori is a glaciated mountain range with a distinct, “otherworldly” landscape of giant lobelias, heather forests, and deep bogs.

This 6-day itinerary follows the Central Circuit, the most historic and scenic route. It is designed for those who want to reach Weismann’s Peak (4,620m)—the highest non-technical peak—offering incredible views of the snow-capped Margherita Peak without the need for specialized ice-climbing equipment.

Hiking Itinerary

Day 1Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut (2,651m)

Your adventure begins at the Nyakalengija park headquarters, where you will meet your team of guides and porters. The trek starts through local farmlands and follows the Mubuku River, eventually crossing into the National Park boundary. You will hike through montane forest, keeping an eye out for blue monkeys, Rwenzori turacos, and the three-horned chameleon. The day ends with a steady climb up a steep ridge to Nyabitaba Hut, where you will spend your first night listening to the sounds of the chimpanzees in the surrounding forest.

Day 2Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut (3,505m)

Today the trail descends through the forest to the Kurt Shafer Bridge, the confluence of the Mubuku and Bujuku rivers. From here, you begin a challenging ascent through the bamboo zone and into the heather zone, where trees are draped in “Old Man’s Beard” lichens. You will navigate the boardwalks of the lower Bigo Bog—an iconic Rwenzori feature—before arriving at John Matte Hut. On a clear day, you’ll catch your first glimpses of the snow-capped Mount Stanley and Mount Speke peaks from this camp.

Day 3John Matte to Bujuku Hut (3,962m)

The trek continues through the Upper Bigo Bog, where the landscape opens up into a dramatic alpine valley. You will cross the Bujuku River and enter the “Giant Lobelia” zone, surrounded by prehistoric-looking vegetation. The trail leads to the stunning Lake Bujuku, which sits in a deep glacial cirque surrounded by the peaks of Mount Baker, Mount Speke, and Mount Stanley. You will spend the night at Bujuku Hut, which serves as a vital acclimatization point for the higher altitudes ahead.

Day 4Bujuku to Kitandara Hut (4,023m)

Leaving Bujuku, the trail climbs steeply through Groundsel Gully toward the Scott Elliot Pass. This is one of the most scenic sections of the trek, offering panoramic views back toward Lake Bujuku and forward toward the Kitandara Lakes. You will descend into a valley filled with massive boulders and alpine flora before reaching the Kitandara Lakes. This “twin lake” setting is often considered the most beautiful campsite on the mountain, providing a peaceful atmosphere before your summit attempt.

Day 5Summit Weismann's Peak (4,620m) & Guy Yeoman (3,505m)

Summit day begins early with a scramble over solid rock and tussock grass. The climb to Weismann’s Peak is steep but rewarding, offering a breathtaking 360-degree view of the main peaks, including Margherita, Baker, and Speke. After celebrating at the summit, you will begin a long descent through the “Fresh Fields” pass—a high-altitude plateau of alpine moss. You will navigate the slippery rock shelters of Bujongolo, used by early 1906 explorers, before finally arriving at Guy Yeoman Hut for your final night on the mountain.

Day 6Guy Yeoman to Nyakalengija

The final day is a long descent back to the park gates. The trail winds through deep bogs and bamboo forests, eventually rejoining the montane forest zone. You will pass the Kichuchu rock shelters and cross the Mubuku River several times on suspension bridges. As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the vegetation more familiar. You will reach Nyakalengija in the late afternoon, where you will receive your trekking certificate and meet your driver for the transfer back to Kasese or Fort Portal.
