This 6-day primate safari in Uganda is a journey into the heart of the Albertine Rift, designed for those who wish to walk in the footsteps of our closest living relatives. Uganda is uniquely positioned as the only place on earth where the vast rainforests of Central Africa meet the rolling savannahs of East Africa, creating a sanctuary for over 5,000 chimpanzees and half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.
You will travel from the “Primate Capital of the World” in Kibale Forest, home to 13 different primate species, through the scenic craters of the west, and finally deep into the ancient, mist-covered valleys of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This itinerary balances high-adrenaline trekking with moments of serene beauty, offering a profound connection with the wild.
Your safari begins with a scenic drive from Entebbe or Kampala heading west toward Fort Portal. As you leave the city behind, the landscape transforms into lush tea plantations and rolling hills. You will stop for a traditional lunch in the shadow of the Rwenzori Mountains—the legendary “Mountains of the Moon”—before continuing to your lodge on the edge of Kibale National Park. In the evening, you can take a guided walk through the forest canopy to spot nocturnal primates or simply relax as the sounds of the jungle begin their nightly chorus.

The morning is dedicated to an exhilarating encounter with the wild chimpanzees of Kibale Forest. After a briefing from park rangers, you will head into the undergrowth to track a habituated troop; watching them play, groom, and vocalize in the trees is a masterclass in social complexity. Following lunch, you will visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a community-led nature walk. This swamp is a bird-watcher’s paradise, famous for the Great Blue Turaco and eight other species of monkeys, and provides an excellent look at how local conservation efforts support the community.

After breakfast, you will take a slow drive through the Kasenda Craters, a stunning landscape of ancient volcanic lakes that offer some of the best photography spots in Uganda. Your journey then continues south into Queen Elizabeth National Park. In the afternoon, you will board a boat for a cruise on the Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway where hippos, crocodiles, and elephants gather in incredible numbers. It serves as a perfect transition between the dense forests of the north and the mountain ranges of the south.

Today you drive toward the remote Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, famous for its unique population of lions that spend their days lounging in the branches of ancient fig trees. After a morning game drive in search of these tree-climbing kings, you will begin your ascent into the Kigezi Highlands, often called the “Switzerland of Africa.” The roads wind upward through steep, terraced hills until you reach the towering, emerald-green wall of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where you will settle in for the night.

This is the definitive highlight of your Ugandan adventure. You will head to the park headquarters at dawn for a briefing on the gorilla trekking rules before being led by expert trackers into the ancient rainforest. The trek can be challenging, involving steep slopes and thick vegetation, but the moment you find your gorilla family, the effort disappears. You will spend one hour just meters away from a massive Silverback and his family, observing their gentle nature and human-like expressions—a rare privilege that remains etched in memory forever.

On your final day, you will begin the journey back to Entebbe, passing through the vibrant town of Mbarara. You will make a ceremonial stop at the Equator crossing in Kayabwe, where you can stand in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres at once for a classic photo. After a farewell lunch and some time to browse the local craft markets for handmade woodcarvings and textiles, you will be transferred to the airport in time for your evening flight, marking the end of your primate odyssey.
