This 7-day “Primate and Powerful Falls” Uganda safari is a curated expedition through the country’s most famous conservation areas. By focusing on Murchison Falls, Kibale Forest, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, this itinerary offers a deep dive into the diverse habitats of the Pearl of Africa. You will transition from the roaring savannahs and the world’s most powerful waterfall to the ancient, high-altitude rainforests that shelter our closest living relatives—the chimpanzees and the endangered mountain gorillas.
Your adventure begins with a drive north from Kampala, heading toward the legendary Murchison Falls National Park. The first major highlight is a stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, where you will track southern white rhinos on foot alongside expert rangers. After lunch, you’ll enter the park and drive to the “Top of the Falls” to witness the Nile River explode through a narrow 7-meter gorge. You will conclude the day by checking into your lodge, where the evening air is filled with the sounds of the African bush.

Start your morning with a sunrise game drive across the northern savannah plains. This is the best time to spot lions, leopards, giraffes, and massive herds of elephants. In the afternoon, the perspective shifts as you board a boat cruise upstream toward the base of the falls. Along the riverbanks, you will see hundreds of hippos, giant Nile crocodiles, and a variety of water birds. This day perfectly captures the “Big Five” experience combined with the unique aquatic life of the Victoria Nile.

Today is a scenic travel day as you head southwest toward the lush region of Fort Portal. The drive takes you through shifting landscapes, from dry savannah to the verdant tea plantations that carpet the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. You will arrive at the edge of Kibale National Park, known as the “Primate Capital of the World,” in the late afternoon. Spend the evening relaxing at your lodge or taking a short walk through the nearby crater lake fields.

The morning is dedicated to chimpanzee tracking in the dense Kibale rainforest. Guided by rangers, you will follow the vocalizations of these primates until you find them swinging through the canopy or grooming on the forest floor. In the afternoon, you will visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-led conservation project. Here, you can spot rare birds like the Great Blue Turaco and up to eight other monkey species, providing a comprehensive look at Uganda’s arboreal wildlife.

After breakfast, you begin your journey toward the southwestern tip of Uganda. This drive offers some of the most spectacular views in the country as you traverse the terraced hills of the Kigezi Highlands, often called the “Switzerland of Africa.” You will pass through quiet mountain villages and catch glimpses of the misty forest canopies. By evening, you will arrive at the gateway of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, settling in for a restful night before your encounter with the giants.

This is the pinnacle of your safari. After a briefing by park rangers, you will enter the ancient Bwindi forest to track a habituated mountain gorilla family. The trek can be physically demanding, involving steep climbs through thick vegetation, but the reward is a life-changing one-hour encounter with these gentle giants. Watching a silverback watch you is an experience that defies words. After the trek, you will return to your lodge for a celebratory dinner and a well-earned rest.

On your final day, you will begin the drive back to Kampala or Entebbe. The route takes you through the beautiful rolling hills of Mbarara, where you will stop for lunch and a visit to the Equator line for photographs and souvenir shopping. You will arrive back in the city in the late afternoon or early evening, marking the end of an incredible week exploring the very best of Uganda’s natural heritage.
